A Perfect Day in Teide National Park

Visiting Teide National Park is a must on any Tenerife trip. Home to Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide, and otherworldly volcanic landscapes, it feels like stepping onto another planet. Whether you hike, take the cable car, or just drive through, Teide is an unforgettable day trip.
Here’s how to make the most of a day in Tenerife’s most famous natural wonder.
Morning: Scenic Drive into the Park
The journey is part of the experience. Driving from the south, you’ll pass through pine forests and watch as the landscape shifts into a moon-like world of lava fields.

  • Stop at Mirador de Chío or Mirador de La Ruleta for panoramic photos.
  • Expect the air to be cooler - pack a sweater, even in summer.

Why Go:

The views change dramatically with every turn, offering some of the best road-trip photography in Europe.

Try:

An early morning departure to avoid crowds and catch the golden light.

Good For:

Road trippers, photographers, nature lovers.
Midday: Cable Car or Hiking Adventure
Take the Teleférico del Teide (cable car) up to 3,555m, just shy of the summit. From there, enjoy marked trails with jaw-dropping views over Tenerife and, on clear days, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.

  • Summit access (Pico del Teide) requires a special permit, bookable months in advance.
  • Alternative hikes: Roques de García loop (easy, 1–2 hrs) for dramatic lava formations.

Why Go:

Teide offers one of the world’s most surreal high-altitude landscapes.

Try:

The Roques de García hike if you don’t want to commit to altitude.

Good For:

Hikers, adventurers, families with teens.
Evening: Stargazing Experience
Teide is one of the world’s best stargazing spots, thanks to its high altitude and clear skies. Book a guided stargazing tour or simply pull over at one of the designated viewpoints at night.

  • Guided tours often include telescopes and expert astronomers.
  • Popular stargazing stops: Mirador de Samara and Parador de Cañadas del Teide.

Why Go:

Few places on Earth offer such bright, clear constellations.

Try:

A tour that combines sunset views with telescopes under the stars.

Good For:

Romantic couples, astronomy fans, families with older kids.

Whether you’re hiking volcanic trails, gliding up in the cable car, or watching constellations above the clouds, Teide National Park proves why Tenerife is more than just beaches. And the best part? You’ll feel like you’ve travelled to another planet - without leaving the island.

While this list is based on personal visits, we’re open to featuring more great spots.
