Half-Day Trip to Masca: Hidden Mountain Village

Tucked away in the dramatic Teno Mountains of northwestern Tenerife, Masca is a jaw-dropping village once considered so remote that even the locals say pirates used to hide there. Today, it's one of the island’s most scenic destinations - perfect for a half-day trip if you’re based in the south or west.
Here’s how to make the most of a short but unforgettable visit to Masca.
Getting There is Half the Fun

The drive to Masca is part of the adventure — a winding mountain road with hairpin turns and dramatic drop-offs. It's fully paved and safe, but narrow. Drive carefully and take your time.

  • From Los Gigantes, it’s about 30–40 minutes by car.
  • From Costa Adeje, expect 1 to 1.5 hours with stops for photos.

Why Go:

The landscape is surreal - like a mix of Machu Picchu and a Canary Island fairy tale.

Try:

Stopping at the Mirador de Cherfe for a panoramic view over the valley.

Good For:

Photographers, scenic drive lovers, nature seekers.

Masca village itself is very small — a handful of stone houses perched along steep paths, surrounded by lush green cliffs. It takes under 30 minutes to walk from end to end, but the views are everything.

  • Grab a local coffee at Bar Restaurante El Guanche — known for its terrace with a canyon view.
  • Pick up local honey or gofio snacks from tiny roadside stalls.
  • If you're up for it, start (or finish) the Masca Gorge Hike — permits required if hiking the full trail to the coast.

Why Go:

You won’t find another place like it on Tenerife.

Try:

Fresh orange juice with a view - it's become a Masca classic.

Good For:

Slow travellers, hikers, romantic couples, solo explorers.

Santiago del Teide – Stop in this mountain town for a coffee or quick lunch.

Los Carrizales – Another scenic overlook on your return drive.

Teno Alto (optional) – If you're not pressed for time, it’s a peaceful village with cheese farms and goat trails.

Whether you're winding through mountain passes or sipping juice with a canyon view, Masca is a reminder that the best parts of Tenerife are sometimes the hardest to reach. And the best part? It still feels like a secret - even in 2025.

While this list is based on personal visits, we’re open to featuring more great spots.

If you run a business in Tenerife and want to be included, let’s talk

📌 The road is safe but narrow — avoid driving it in the dark or in foggy weather.
📌 Parking is limited — arrive early (before 10:30 AM) or late in the day.
📌 Hikers need to book a permit in advance if doing the full Masca Gorge route (from Masca to the coast).
